What happens to an advocate’s voice under judicial pressure.
Twelve years of call does not protect you from it. When a judge pushes, the autonomic response changes the breath, and the voice goes with it.
In a hearing
The judge interrupts, the breath goes high and shallow, the pitch rises and the pace accelerates. The argument on paper is unchanged. The authority delivering it is gone.
Nobody in that room will tell you that is what happened. You will be told the point did not land.
In cross-examination
The voice pushes for control instead of holding it. The endings of questions lift, and the witness hears a request rather than a question they have to answer.
Control in cross comes from pause and from a flat, unhurried ending, and both are mechanical.
Across a long hearing
It becomes stamina. Forty minutes of sustained projection with no amplification, and the voice thins in the last ten, which is exactly where it needed to land.
By the afternoon it is thinner still, and most advocates assume that is simply how the job works. It is not. It is effort in the throat instead of support from the body, and it is the fastest thing on this page to fix.
What this is not
It is not advocacy training. I am not going to tell you how to build a cross or structure a submission, and you would be right to ignore me if I tried. The argument is yours.
I work on what is left of it by the time the court hears it: breath, pace, pitch and pause. All mechanical, all trainable, and almost nobody trains them.
Who I work with
Barristers and solicitor advocates, one to one. Family law teams, where the voice has to hold a client’s pain without breaking and hold authority without hardening.
Recent work includes a session with the family law team at Dawson Cornwell on the voice under emotional pressure. In December 2026 I speak at the House of Lords at the AIJUDEFA international family law seminar.
