Athletes and the media
You train every detail of your game. Then they put a microphone in front of you.
For professional athletes who want to sound as good in front of the press, sponsors and the dressing room as they are in competition. In English and Spanish, with your agent or manager involved if you want.
Where it shows
The interview straight after competing. You are out of breath, the adrenaline is still up and the camera is already on. That is when the short, flat answers come, or the one sentence you regret.
Press conferences after a bad result, when every question is a trap.
Sponsors and events, where you are expected to speak to a room of executives like one of them.
Speaking in another language. Many athletes live and compete in English or Spanish without it being their first language, and in front of a microphone it shows.
The dressing room. Captains and senior players who have to speak to a group and be listened to.
What we work on
Three messages for the difficult questions, in your own words, so you are not improvising when the pressure is on.
Pace and pauses, so you sound calm even when you are not.
Your voice in English or Spanish, so in your second language you sound like yourself and not like someone reading.
Why me
I spent ten years as a professional opera tenor, singing in theatres of up to 1,800 seats without a microphone. On stage you learn what adrenaline does to the voice and how to keep control of it, because there is no second take. I work in English and Spanish, and I also spent ten years in business, so I know what sponsors and companies expect when they put you in front of their people.
Format
A programme over the season, built around your calendar, online or in person in London or Madrid.
Or short, focused preparation before a specific moment: a big press conference, a presentation, an event with a sponsor.
Your agent or manager can be part of it if you want.
After sport
Moving into television, coaching, business or speaking. The voice that worked in the dressing room does not always work in a studio or a boardroom, and that can be trained too.
Questions
Do you work with clubs or only with individual athletes?
Both. I work one to one with athletes, and I can run sessions for a squad or for the people at a club who face the media.
Can my agent or manager arrange it?
Yes. Your agent or manager can write to me directly and we organise everything with them.
Is it confidential?
Completely. I do not name the athletes I work with unless they want me to.
Can we work online around training and travel?
Yes. Most of the work can be done online, at times that fit around training, competition and travel.
How much does it cost?
There is no public price list. Write to me with the date and what is coming up, and I send you a short written proposal within two working days.
It might be a board meeting, a hearing, an investor pitch, a promotion panel or a team that is not getting its message across. Just send me an email, there is no form. I reply within two working days and, if it makes sense, we have a 20-minute call. Or start with a free voice read: send me two minutes of you in a real meeting and I will tell you what I hear.
