Executive presence

They said you need more gravitas. Nobody said what to change.

It is the most common feedback at senior level and the least useful, because it names a perception instead of a behaviour. The behaviour underneath it is almost always mechanical.

Why this feedback keeps coming back

Up to a point you are promoted for what you deliver. Above that you are promoted for what a room concludes about you in ten minutes, and nobody tells you that the conclusion is being drawn from how you sound rather than from what you know.

So the feedback arrives as a label. Presence. Gravitas. Executive maturity. It describes the effect and never the cause, which is why two years of trying to be more confident changes nothing.

And it rarely comes with examples, because the people giving it heard something and could not name it either.

What the room is actually reading

Four things, and they are all physical. Where the voice sits, because a voice carried high reads as urgency rather than weight. Whether you pause, because a voice that never stops tells the room it is worried about being interrupted.

What your sentence endings do, because an ending that lifts turns a decision into a request, and an ending that fades turns a recommendation into a thought.

And what happens to all three when someone challenges you. That is the moment the room is really assessing, and it is the moment almost nobody has trained.

What it costs to leave it alone

The room goes to whoever sounded more certain. That is a mandate that went elsewhere, a promotion that went to the other director, a client who chose the firm that felt safer.

It almost never appears as feedback, because nobody in that room knows why they leaned one way. Which is exactly why it can run for years while your numbers stay fine.

Why this is not confidence coaching

You are not short of confidence. You have been on an exec committee and closed things that mattered. What happens is that under pressure the breath rises, and the voice goes with it, and the room hears something you did not intend to send.

Mindset work aims at the wrong layer. By the time you feel nervous, the air is already high in your chest. Fix the mechanics and the nerves usually settle on their own, because the instrument stops surprising you.

How we work on it

First session, sixty minutes, on a real situation or a recording of you in a real meeting. I tell you which of the four it is. It is usually one, not four.

Then six to twelve sessions on your own rooms: the committee you present to, the conversation you know is coming, the panel in March. Recorded at the start and again later, so you hear the two side by side rather than take my word for it.

If it turns out the problem is your message rather than your delivery, I will tell you in the first hour and you will have saved yourself a programme.
