For investment and deal teams
The numbers were right. The committee still wasn’t convinced.
In-house workshops for investment, deal and fund teams. Each person presents a real piece of work, a thesis, a section of the deck or an update for investors, and defends it while I play the committee.
What happens in the workshop
Each person brings something real. The thesis they are taking to committee, a section of the fund presentation, the quarterly update for investors.
I play the investment committee or the investor. I push back on the number, ask for the bear case, interrupt halfway through the slide and ask why this is not already priced in.
They do it again straight away, and the whole group hears the difference. Most of the time is spent on your feet, not looking at slides.
Situations we work on
Investment committee presentations. Investor and LP meetings, fundraising and annual meetings. Roadshows and pitches to new investors. Presenting to sellers and management teams in a deal. Q&A when someone challenges the number.
What usually goes wrong
A good thesis loses weight in the delivery. People rush the part they are least sure of, read the slide instead of landing the point, and the voice rises when the challenge comes. A committee reads that as doubt about the numbers. In teams that present in English as a second language, all of this shows more.
Why me
I spent ten years in banking and corporate finance, at HSBC, EY and JLL, before working with voice, and ten years as a professional opera tenor. I know what an investment committee feels like from the inside.
Format
90 minutes or half a day, at your offices or remote. Groups of up to twelve, so everyone gets time on their feet. In English or Spanish. If there is a committee, a roadshow or an investor meeting coming up, the session is built around it.
Recent work
Amro Partners, a session at their Madrid offices for the investment, development and operations teams. Patrivalor SGIIC, an asset manager in Madrid.
“Many thanks to Julio for the insightful session and for taking the time to visit our offices in Madrid. It was extremely valuable for all the teams involved (investment, development, and operations) and highly recommended for any company that interacts regularly with clients, investors, suppliers, commercial partners, and other stakeholders, and wants to strengthen the quality, effectiveness, and security of those interactions.”
Pablo García-Morales Osorio, Managing Director and Co-Head of Iberia, Amro Partners
“We all make small mistakes without realising it: forcing the voice, running out of air, weak projection, filler words, a flat and monotonous tone, all of which make an audience disconnect.”
Ricardo Santos, CFA, Fund Manager, Patrivalor SGIIC (translated from Spanish)
Questions from firms
Do you run investor presentation training for investment teams?
Yes. Workshops of 90 minutes or half a day, at your offices or remote. Each person works on a real presentation to a committee or to investors.
Can we use our real deck?
Yes. Send it in advance and we work on it in the session. Everything stays confidential.
Do you work with teams in Madrid?
Yes, in Spanish or in English, at your offices in Madrid or remote. Many teams in Madrid present to international investors in English, and that is one of the things we work on.
What does the firm get after the workshop?
Each participant gets a short written note with the two or three things to keep working on. Whoever commissioned the workshop gets a one-page summary of what I saw in the group and what I would work on next.
How do we book?
Send me an email with who the team is, roughly how many people and what is coming up. I reply within two working days with a short written proposal. There is no public price list.
It might be a board meeting, a hearing, an investor pitch, a promotion panel or a team that is not getting its message across. Just send me an email, there is no form. I reply within two working days and, if it makes sense, we have a 20-minute call. If you have a recording of yourself in a real meeting, send it over and I will tell you what I hear.
